The Lawrence City Band has long been a landmark in Northeast Kansas. The band is comprised from a wide variety of individuals young and not so young, who share a common interest and enthusiasm. These individuals are mainly from within Lawrence, but there are also dedicated individuals who drive in from as far as seventy-five miles who have deep rooted strong ties to Lawrence. During the summer concert season, the band holds concerts on Wednesday evenings at the William Kelly Bandstand in South Park at 8:00. There is no charge for admission. On these Wednesdays, the band meets and rehearses for one hour, takes an hour break, and then they meet at the bandstand for the concert. The concert program starts off with the John Philip Sousa arrangement of the Star Spangled Banner, is followed immediately by a rousing march, then the next selection is usually a concert overture. The last selection of the concert is always a march and the middle of the concert is a collage of medleys, solos, big band music, and an audience participation piece. For each of these selections Bob Newton, who is the announcer for the Lawrence City Band, provides an entertaining flavor in delivering the program notes to the audience. One thing that makes these concerts so great is that kids are allowed to make noise, both joyful and not so joyful, and dogs are allowed to bark at the tubas if they so desire. Family fun is exactly what these concerts are all about. The Lawrence City Band has a well established reputation for being one of the top performing community concert bands of its type in the nation. In 1988 the band achieved the top honor for a community band when they were awarded the Sudler Silver Scroll. This prestigious award is part of a series of awards given by the John Philip Sousa Foundation in recognition for high achieving concert bands and their musicians.
